Race Report from Jamie Ali Arrived in Paris a few days early to visit the sites and the running expo. I had been overwhelmed by the support and best of luck wishes from family, friends and running club training buddies so was now ready to give it my all. On Sunday 7th April 2013 I attended the 37th edition of the Marathon De Paris and as one of the top ten marathons in the world was very fitting with this being my first marathon experience. Overall, there was a record amount of participation and a record number of "finishers". 40,108 of us were at the start, and 38,690 of us were at the finish line. The 42.195km spanned across the beautiful city starting on Avenue des Champs-Élysées and finishing on Avenue Foch, near the Arc de Triomphe. The starting line was buzzing; full of race anticipation with thousands of runners focusing on carrying out their pre-race rituals. The Champs-Elysées, Bastille Plaza, and banks of the Seine river have never seen so many enthusiastic runners. There were thousands of volunteers who all worked hard to ensure a great event happened like clockwork. There was water, fruit and sponges at every 5km mark, although I seemed to miss out on the cheese and wine that was being served towards the finishing line. There was nearly 90 international live bands playing a variety of tunes/music which all made life a much easier and was a welcomed distraction. The crowd was amazing and managed to convert race grimaces into smiles. A Hedge End Running club training team mate had recommended that I try some ogy ogy ogy down a long tunnel which was very well received as I heard many runners joining in with me with plenty of oi oi oi’s. I even had time to enjoy some “high fiving” with kids in the crowds, a comfort break and to retie my shoe laces within this race. Please find the statistics for my 1st time Marathon: Finish Time: 03 H 22'45'' Finisher Position: 4,376 out of 38,690 finishers Category: VH1 (Male from 1964 to 1973) Category Finish Position: 1,602 I was positioned 12,347 at the 5km mark so must have overtaken some 8,010 runners before finishing & rocking in at 1,602 place in my veteran male category which I am very happy with. In summary as much as this distance is the ultimate running challenge, I highly recommend it to all level of runners as a must try at least once in a life time experience and who knows you could be tempted to do more!! It was truly an awesome experience with many amazing memories. Who fancies a challenge! We would like to form teams to enter the Endure24 event on the 8th/9th June. Details of the event can be found on the following link. http://www.endure24.co.uk/ The basics: Team event; open to everyone; each lap of the course is 5 miles, meaning that after 5 miles you can hand over to another team mate; camping on site is free (although we're not sure how much sleeping will be done!); you must have a head torch or hand held torch; we think this is going to be a great way of getting to know other Hedgies and have a weekend away:-) The cost of the event is £30 per person. We think you will end up running around the 20 - 25 (could be more) mile mark during the 24 hours. It will involve running your turn during the night. There is ample space to camp when not running. We will coordinate the entry once we have names. If you are committed to taking part and haven't already accepted the Facebook invite please email: alexracheljohnson@talktalk.net if you are a gent; or ladies.captain@hedgeendrunningclub.com if you are a lady. Thank You Alex Another awesome morning at Netley Abbey. 22 Hedgies running, many more volunteering. Another week another winner with Sonia Rushby first lady (2nd claim). Robson Trendell picked up his 50 runs T-shirt. 6 x PB's including Sheryl James who completed her 50th Parkrun and supplied cakes for the masses, good work all round. A selection of photos are available here Every runner was once a beginner. The beginners section of the website is for anyone who is just starting out or returning to running and is looking for some advice, what kit to buy, how far to run, should I join the club? Further information is available here I've worked out an 11K route for tomorrow, mixed terrain,(road/trail) starting and finnishing at the school. It's challanging (long hill) but doable. The off road section is good for core stability. I plan to run it with breaks. The ground conditions should be firm if a little damp and possibly muddy. See you tomorrow if you're up for it. Meet at Wildern School 7PM as normal. Further info on the planned route can be found here. Bernie If the weather continues to be inclement we will use the following route as an alternative, which can be found here The AGM minutes for 2013 and the club constitution are now available on the web site:
AGM 2013 Minutes and Club Constitution Tuesday - Speed / Endurance Training for tonight is “Week 5”. The main focus of the session will be a “A timed run over 1600mtrs (approx 1 mile) to measure progress.” The course will be around Dowds Farm Mile. Meet at Wildern School 7PM as normal. The Bournemouth Bay 5K / 10K and Half Marathon races took place today along Bournemouth seafront. Conditions were near perfect for running, the events were seamlessly organised and it certainly an event I would recommend. 5K results
10K resultsHalf MarathonAnother fantastic run by Kirsty Shannon who was the 23rd lady home in a time of 1:39:38 in a field of nearly 1,400.
