London Marathon 2016 - Pre-race ramblings... - Simon Vargeson

So I'm currently sat on the train making my way into London in preparation for the marathon tomorrow, and using this 'down-time' as an opportune time to write my pre-race report for the club...

I was very fortunate (and grateful) to get one of the club places - and this race, more than any other - will be one of the most meaningful runs I am likely to ever do.  The reason for this is because I am running this race for The Courage Foundation UK.  This is a new charity that my sister and brother-in-law have set up to help families and particularly young children, that experience the death of a son, daughter, brother or sister.  I won't go into all the details here, but for anyone interested in hearing their story and learning more about the charity, please ask me anytime, or visit their website www.thecouragefoundation.uk

Needless to say, tomorrow is going to be emotional.  I'm running it for my nephew, Jethro Courage Vargeson Palmer and have been overwhelmed by people's generosity to the charity that has been set up as a legacy to him.

For anyone that would like to add a few pennies to the pot, my fundraising page link is:

https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/simonvargeson1

So onto the more practical details...

Training for London has been mixed.  A sprained ankle on one of the long runs set me back a few weeks, coupled with a number of business trips (and a family holiday) all of which is playing on my mind today, leaving me with the usual fears around not having done enough training etc.  But I go into this race on the back of Bournemouth marathon last Oct, and was very pleased with my time.  I've tried to maintain a similar level of fitness...  Guess we'll find out tomorrow ;-)  It's fair to say that I've not enjoyed the long training runs as much this time.  The early season marathon means the majority of training is through the winter.  Not so much fun.  I really enjoyed some of the long training runs for Bournemouth, in the light summer mornings... Keep this in mind Bournemouth marathon team!!

I'm not 100% sure or decided on my time goals for tomorrow.  My main goal is to finish in a respectable time, and 'enjoy' running one of the World's greatest marathons.  (When I last ran London back in 2009, the 'traffic' at the start was crazy, so if it's anything like that again, the chances of a PB are slim.)

Post race report to follow.  Good luck to all HERC runners racing tomorrow - Southampton & London!

Join us with your family and friends for a celebration BBQ!! Sunday 15th May, straight after the Netley 10k (part of the HRRL) (12 – 4pm)
Whether you’re brand new to the club or you’re one of our club’s recent inspirational marathon or half marathon runners, join us for an afternoon BBQ to help celebrate everyone’s achievements over the last few months!! So join us for a relaxing bbq from 12-2.30pm, after which we can then move down to the main playing fields for some competitive field games!

What’s happening!
We have hired the Rowan BBQ site at Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley Abbey (next to the overflow car park in the top field http://www3.hants.gov.uk/bbqsites-rvcp.pdf) and will have all the coals ready straight after the race awards presentation which should end at about 12.15pm! Soft drinks will also be provided.
…
What you need to bring!
Show off an event you’ve taken part in by either wearing your event t-shirt or bring your medal along. You will also need to bring as much food as you can eat and while we will be providing some soft drinks, you may also want to bring some extras just in case. Or maybe something a bit stronger?! Some chairs or rugs to sit on would also be useful.
…
If anyone has also got any rounders equipment or similar, please let us know too!
Hope to see you and your friends and families there!
We know that a lot of people have been working very hard over the last 6 months training for particular events and are hoping that this will be a great way for everyone to relax and say well done, so bring your family/friends along for a fun afternoon in the park!

RR10 Cross Country Races commence - bring it on....

Calling all Hedgies!!!
RR10 Cross Country Details...
It’s less than two weeks to the start of the RR10 race series so Chris Brooks and I thought you might want the first few dates for your diaries. For any club members that haven't taken part before, the RR10’s are a series of 'Off-Road' races organised by clubs in South-West Hampshire and are held on a Wednesday evening.
The series this year has been increased from 10 to 11 races in total, although we only run in 9, host one and drop out of one.
Entry is free!
You just need to turn up and wear a club vest or tee shirt (red, white and blue stripey please). The courses vary in distance, but are all between 4 and 5 miles long. They are for all abilities of runner, whether you're a 5 minute miler or a 12 minute plus miler. Whatever pace you are there will always be someone to run with. It’s a great atmosphere and EVERYONE that runs counts towards the club points so PLEASE come along to as many as you can make.
My first race was Royal Victoria Country Park last year. I was very excited to be wearing my Hedgie vest for the first time and really enjoyed it. I couldn’t sleep afterwards as I was so excited! There are lots of people there and cake! Trail shoes are advisable to wear if you have them. If not don’t worry, they are not essential. I didn’t know what trail shoes were until the middle of last year! - They are just trainers specifically designed to give you extra grip off road and in wet conditions. I really enjoy wearing mine so they are a good investment, although at the beginning running does seem to involve a lot of shopping?
Here are the dates of the 1st 4 RR10’s for your diary:
April 20th 7pm Royal Victoria Country Park
May 4th 7.15pm Stoney Cross
May 18th 7.30pm Wilverley, Sway
June 1st 7.30pm Bl
ackfield
More details for the first race at Royal Victoria Country Park will be posted nearer the time, but should you have any questions, please feel free to speak to myself or Chris Brooks. Let's make it a huge turn out on 20th April and we hope to see a lot of new faces. See you all there!
Thanks for your support.
