2017 RR10 Cross Country #2 - Event Info

29/4/2017

The second RR10 event is taking place next Wednesday... it's Totton Running Club’s turn to host the race on the 3rd of May at Stoney Cross/Janesmoor Pond.

All HERC members are welcomed and encouraged to take part and we very much hope you will be able to join us.

Not only is it fun, its FREE to run... all you need to do is turn up on the day with your club vest to race in.

EVENT INFORMATION

Just in case you're new to the series, a link to mapometer to help you find the car park is here.

We recommend car sharing as car parking at Janesmoor Pond is limited.   Once the first car park is full, please park at Stoney Cross, which is about 400 meters down the road from Janesmoor Pond, on the right hand side. The start and finish of the race will be between the two car parks.   DO NOT PARK ON THE GRASS VERGE along the main road.

Due to nesting birds in the area, the race route will be on gravel and concrete/tarmac paths, with the last 200 meters on grass. It's the same route as last year, covering 4.7 miles. A map of the route is here.

We recommend cross or normal trainers.

The race will start promptly at 7.15pm, so please be on time.

2017 Lakeside 5K Series - Race #1 - Results

28/4/2017

This popular series, which also incorporates the Alexandra Sports Inter-Club Challenge, takes place within the Lakeside North Harbour Complex. All the races start at 7.15pm.The individual series is based on the best 3 performances and the team series is based on all 5 races. Every finisher scores a point for their team and the top 10 male and female finishers in each race are awarded bonus points, 10 to the winners to 1 for 10th place. There are awards for the top 8 teams in the Inter-Club Challenge. In addition, there are prizes  for the first 3 male and female finishers  in each race. You can enter the series or individual races either on line, by post or on the night. There is a discount for  pre-entering  the series online.

Well done to the many Hedgies that entered the first race or went along to support. The club was 5th in the Inter-Club challenge last year, so it would be great to improve on that position this year.

The results from race number 1 held on Wednesday the 26th April 2107 were as follows....

Hedge End Running Club member / performance of the month for March 2017

Great News! There will be TWO members of the month in March and April.

This month the awards go to Jo Labram and Kirsty Cartwright.

Kirsty has been a key member of the Ladies team with strong representation in this season's HRRL races and in the Winter Cross Countries. She participated in the three of the CC6 races and four of the Southern Cross Country League races. Kirsty has also been a wonderful Ladies Captain for the past year and has coordinated the RR10 entries and results for the club. Well done Kirsty!

Jo is a founder member of the club and over the past four years has represented the club more times than any other female member in HRRL and RR10 races - a total of 51 times so far. Hard work in training has seen Jo's running getting even stronger... she posted a PB at last month's Eastleigh 10K.   Well done Jo!

Well I feel truly privileged to be running London. It has been a dream that I thought I would never manage – so let’s hope I do manage it. When I got the place I had not been running very much at all and was probably the most unfit I had been for years. This was due to my father in law being terminally ill for most of 2016. Ted (my lovely father in law), died in September, and stupid as it sounds, getting the London place was almost like him saying ‘go on then girl – go show us what you're made of!’.

So basically I worked back up to doing 10km before Christmas, ready for Stubbington 10km. I ran my slowest ever Stubbington run, however I got round.
I then decided to try to increase 1 mile a week for my long run, and that is basically what I did. Although I did miscalculate a few times and did more than expected.
If I am honest I think I peaked too early on distance. I did 21 miles about 5 weeks ago, felt great, but then I really suffered for a few weeks trying to drop back and then maintain the distance.

I fell over twice and really hurt my elbow the second time. I fell whilst looking at my running watch and congratulating myself on the quickest three miles I had done for ages. I then spectacularly glided to a halt on my elbow and knees. That will teach me! My husband was working and I was due to collect my boys from their maths tutor – so had to get up and finish the last 4 miles – looking a real state.

Whilst I got up and carried on running  - this really shook me up. I think this really put me back a few weeks and knocked my confidence. I had a few disastrous runs that were meant to be 16 and 18 miles and ended up being 13, and 15 miles instead, and I was starting to get worried. Anyway I did 18 miles last Saturday (2 weeks before London), and felt OK – not great, but OK.
I had also incorporated at least 2 shorter runs in addition to the long run, either with the club, or by myself. I had to fit everything around work and family commitments. I had planned to do some cross training and joined the gym at work, but haven’t even been in it!

So in brief, I would say, my training has gone OK, I underestimated how much it would take out of me, how tired I would feel, and how hungry I would be. I have not lost any weight at all, which was a bit disappointing – as I could have done with losing a stone, but I didn’t want to diet, whilst training.
Diet, has remained the same, but I eat more protein, and slightly more carbs. I have been using Tailwind, in my Camelbak, which I am now hooked on for any run over 13 miles. Thanks Linda for that tip.

I would also add that it has really helped me to incorporate parkrun into my long Saturday am runs, and also to incorporate club runs in the week, where possible. Thanks everyone for your support – it has really helped.

I am fortunate enough to have Aurelio running with me – so I am sure he will look after me.

I am looking forward to crossing the line, and then seeing my family – I am sure I will cry.

My expectations are to finish, hopefully enjoy it, and not get injured, or feel ill and need to pull out. Which is all very possible given my track record. Most of all I don’t want to let my friends and family down – who have had to put up with me going on about it, and all the hours training for the last few months, and also as I have raised quite a bit for the Joe Glover trust. One thing you can be sure of is that I will be slow – I expect many people in large fancy dress outfits to pass me, but I will still be proud for having a go.

Thanks very much to everyone for all of their support! It really has made a huge difference, and I wouldn’t be where I am now without it!
