About The Club

Welcome to Hedge End Running Club

Hedge End Running Club is a friendly running club for the Hedge End, West End and Botley areas of Southampton.

The club was formed in November 2012 and now has 300 members. We are a friendly bunch from serious road athletes to beginners and we currently have space for new members.

The best way to find out if you want to join us is to come along to a convenient club run or training session. You don't have to join the club to come running with us for the first time: why not come along and see if you like it?

Training

There are a number of sessions throughout the week, however the main two are at 7pm Tuesday & Thursday.

The Tuesday session is generally 2 structured sessions to choose from:

1.          Interval training or hill training. – 7pm start

2.          Southampton Sports Centre Track – 7:30pm start

The Thursday sessions the beginners do a 3-4 (ish) mile and the rest split into groups for a 7 - 10 min or 10 - 12 min paced run that is around 6/7 miles. There is also the option of a structured training session in the form of hills or intervals.

Both of these days finish at around 8pm to 8:30pm at the latest.

The training sessions available are:

  • Monday 6:45PM - Monday Mishmash Structured training for all abilities
  • Monday 7:00PM – Social run from Hedge End Train Station

UKA and England Athletics

  • United Kingdom Athletics (UKA) is the international governing body responsible for a key number of high level functions, including the provision of World Class Performance Athletics such as GB & NI international teams, UKA Rules For Competition, coach licensing and officials licensing
  • England Athletics (EA) develops grass roots athletics in England, supporting affiliated clubs to prosper, developing more and better coaches, recruiting and supporting volunteers and officials. England Athletics provides and supports competition opportunities at an international (England representative), national, area and county level.
  • British Athletics is the brand used in all external UK communications, with UK Athletics reflecting the governance and NGB duties of the organisation

Hedge End Running Club is affiliated to England Athletics. The Club's EA affiliation number is 7692411.

In addition to the club being affiliated, athletes and coaches are also registered with England Athletics.

There are many benefits of being registered with EA, including reduced entry fees for UKA licensed road and multi-terrain events (minimum £2).

In addition, EA provide third party liability insurance for affiliated Clubs, and registered Athletes and Coaches. Details about the insurance cover can be downloaded from here.

Hedge End Running Club's policy is to register all First Claim members with England Athletics and there is an annual EA registration fee in addition to the Club's annual subscription, which make up the total amount payable to the Club each year.

Whilst Hedge End RC collects the EA Registration Fee, we just pass the payment (and some personal data) to England Athletics to complete the registration. Each registered member receives an England Athletics membership card and license number. Once you have been registered, it is your responsibility to keep your data up to date in the EA system through thEA myAthletics portal

If you forget you EA Unique Registration Number (URN), you can look it up here

Frequently asked questions

First or Second Claim - what does this mean?

When you join a running club, providing it is your only club, that is your first claim club.

If you subsequently join another club, that will be your second claim club.

You can race as an individual in open races for any club you are a member of. However, for league and championship races and to count as part of a scoring team, you have to compete for your first claim club, unless it is not affiliated to UKA for that discipline, or is not participating in that league. This system is primarily designed to stop elite athletes swapping from club to club regularly.
